ABSTRACT

Although it is understandable that psychologists and neuroscientists concentrate upon the extremes of these stirred-up states of feeling, and clinicians upon severe exacerbations, it should not be forgotten that lower level expressions of emotion are with all of us throughout each day. Otherwise there would be no feelings of mild contentment; basic decency; no sense that we might just need to keep our eye on a problem, no worries in need of remediation one of these days; no warm glows, guardedness; no vicarious, everyday pity felt in front of the TV screen, in fact nothing much worth having at all.
