ABSTRACT

Although in this chapter set induction and closure are discussed separately, these are complementary skills. There is truth in the old adage that to have a good ending you must first have a good beginning. The symbiotic relationship between the two can be exemplified by examining the behaviours initially identified by Kendon and Ferber (1973) as being associated with the three main phases of greetings and partings between friends:

A Distant phase. When two friends are at a distance, but within sight, the behaviours displayed include hand waving, eyebrow flashing (raising both eyebrows), smiling, head tossing and direct eye contact.
