ABSTRACT

By the second session, it's time to ask the big question: “What are the worst things that ever happened to you?” If we are going to conduct trauma-informed treatment, we need to get the trauma on the table so we can incorporate it into the case formulation and treatment plan. The problems, and the solutions, don't make sense unless you know about the dragon(s). Therefore, the history must be done during the evaluation. Fortunately, it can be done in a careful, intentional way that helps the client to feel safe and able to make progress in treatment.
