ABSTRACT

It is commonly held that 21st century educational providers need to be learner-

centred and develop learning competencies in the learners that will equip them

for continuing academic, vocational and personal growth. O’Banion (2000) sug-

gests that such providers:

• Create substantive change in individual learners. • Engage learners as full partners in the learning process. • Create and offer as many options for learning as possible. • Help learners form and participate in collaborative learning activities. • Define the roles of learning facilitators by the needs of the learners. • Succeed only when they can document improved and expanded learning for

learners. • Regard every member of the institution as a learner.
