ABSTRACT
Tom Paine (1737-1809) was a hero among the early working classes of Britain and the United States, and his ideas helped to nourish the early currents of labor radicalism on both sides of the Atlantic. Paine himself arose from the layer of artisans and craftsmen, the majority of whom would soon evolve into the modern working class.
