ABSTRACT

GREG, Sarah, and their friends have been rehearsing in the basement with their rock band for the past hour and a half. If we were able to observe them in, we would see and hear an intricate, dynamic process in action. We would observe a host of physical actions as they work out technical issues in their singing and playing. We would observe cognitive strategies in play as they seek to iron out some problems in a new song. We would observe social interactions as they collaborate and compete with each other. We would observe emotional responses ranging the gamut of human feelings. In sum, we would be observing a constellation of overlapping, intertwining behaviors, thoughts, and feelings encapsulated in a musical experience. Music psychology is one way we can attempt to understand the complexity of this scenario.
