ABSTRACT
Tom was a handsome young man with a disarming smile. He was reasonably intelligent, but was chronically absent from school. His parents said that he could not be counted on to stay on tasks. They had started noticing objects missing from their home when Tom was about 10 years old. When absent from school, Tom used to set small fires and was soon picked up by the police. They also found some stolen items, but he lied so convincingly that the police let him go.
