ABSTRACT

The Johnson family lived in the Chicago community of Englewood. In the 1950s and early 1960s Englewood was known for its many journalists and community leaders. However, rioting in the 1960s left the community in shambles. The following years were not kind to Englewood; its schools became known as among the worst in Chicago (Williams, 2005). Gang violence was rampant and residents heard a nightly chorus of gunfire.
