ABSTRACT

As in the case of entertainers, agents represent professional athletes. Although differences exist, their basic role is the same: negotiating

employment contracts and marketing their clients. As shown later in this book, agents not only do the face-to-face negotiations, but also have to sell the image of the athlete to the public, much like an agent representing a film or music star. Additionally, both athletes and entertainers work under the rules of their unions. For example, film actors often have to operate under the rules negotiated by the Screen Actors’ Guild and Hollywood studios. Similarly, football players have to operate under the agreements negotiated between the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) and the NFL.
