ABSTRACT

As we noted in Chapter 2, the streets and alleyways in Kowloon Walled City were progressively incorporated into private space. Roof surfaces were regularly enclosed to serve as extensions of habitable space or co-opted to serve as access pathways, drying spaces, playgrounds, schools, aviaries, or gardens. The boundaries between private and public were vague and readily renegotiated.
