ABSTRACT
Today's Building Information Modelling systems – the software tools used to create BIM models – all originated in mainstream computer-aided design. So, before moving on to a description of the technical capabilities of BIM systems, it will be useful to discuss the key features of computer-aided design in general and to outline briefly its short, interesting and surprisingly complicated history.
