ABSTRACT

Following the lengthy review of techniques and methods provided in the previous chapter, and notwithstanding the fact that a substantial range of examples was included in this account, the present chapter provides specific and detailed case studies of the application of planning-related perception studies in two Third World countries, namely Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago, West Indies. These studies are set in the context of the accounts of urban development and planning systems in these two countries that were provided in Chapters 3 and 4 respectively. The overall aim is to provide an impression of the way in which sets of cognitive-behavioural techniques may be applied in an holistic manner to examine planning-related themes and issues, in both the historical and contemporary contexts. This is important, for in the previous chapter, although a large number of separate techniques were reviewed, little indication was given of the manner in which these can be combined together to form an overall research methodology.
