ABSTRACT

As you have read, educational virtual worlds in recent years have been created using multiple theory frameworks including (but not limited to) constructivism, cognitive processing theory, behaviorism, and, most often, situated learning. The application of each of these theories in creating virtual worlds helps define the types of activities learners conduct while in the worlds. Understanding these theories and the kinds of learning activities that go along with them provides some guidance when critiquing existing virtual worlds as platforms for learning.
