ABSTRACT

It is often the case—unfortunately—that assessment is an afterthought (or, even worse, a non-thought) as one designs curriculum for a given subject domain. Assessment is a key component of design for learning, and assessment of learning within virtual worlds is no exception—and, of course, good assessment requires good measurement. This chapter covers several important aspects of measurement and assessment of learning within virtual worlds, beginning with an overview of the distinct differences between measurement and assessment, followed by a brief review of reliability and validity—oriented specifically toward learning in virtual worlds. This section is followed by a discussion about what can (and should) be measured in virtual worlds.
