ABSTRACT

The first steps in a journey are often described as the hardest. Therapists play a critical role in inspiring confidence and building momentum as the child “crosses the threshold” into life story work and masters the demons of past traumas. Chapter 1 provides opportunities to build rapport and develop a solid working alliance between therapist and child. Initial activities foster a sense of fun and recognition of a child’s strengths while at the same time starting work on affect modulation skills for the quest ahead. Chapter 1 also introduces the child to the structure of sessions and the therapist’s role in fostering a safe routine regardless of the crises in the child’s world.
