ABSTRACT

It may seem odd to think of spirituality as something that you manage. We typically do not think of spiritual matters that way. Spirituality seems somehow otherworldly and beyond mere human attempts to shape and influence it. We view spirituality in recovery as a very practical business and believe it is absolutely essential to have a solid spiritual program if you are to remain sober. Developing and maintaining a spiritual program in recovery is a major obstacle for many chemically dependent people. Spirituality is often associated with inspiration, and attempts to put it into a structure may seem inappropriate. We may feel that spirituality can be experienced or cultivated only when the spirit moves us. However, spirituality in recovery need not be an ethereal, haphazard, or chance affair.
