ABSTRACT

Simply stated, the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous are the most effective blueprint that we know for initiating and sustaining recovery from addictive diseases. The Twelve Steps provide us with both principles and a sequence of action steps to transform our lives completely: our personal and our occupational lives. The Twelve Steps provide both primary and secondary effects. The primary effect of the Twelve Steps is getting us sober. An important secondary effect is bringing a sense of serenity to our work life. The Twelve Steps are designed to produce serenity, equanimity, happiness, and balance in our personal and professional lives. You do not get sober simply to abstain from alcohol and drugs: you get sober to enjoy all that life has to offer and to become all you were born to be. This is the ultimate spiritual message and mission of the Twelve Steps.
