ABSTRACT

The inpatient, or an intensive outpatient, treatment experience gives the chemically dependent individual essential knowledge, behavioral skills, and emotional, psychological, and spiritual experiences that are considered to be fundamental to the task of ongoing recovery from addictive diseases. Returning again and again to the knowledge that you acquired during the laying of the foundation for your recovery can be very useful, especially during the first year of recovery. We cannot fully replicate your inpatient experience. There you may have experienced a profound sense of safety, the sanctuary of an enlightened community of patients and therapists who stewarded you toward sobriety. We know you cannot get the intimacy and exhilaration of your therapy group by reading a lesson on the basics of addictions recovery. However, we believe that this lesson will reactivate and reinforce the many important issues and experiences you gained during your recovery foundation.
