ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to highlight that in order to address the barriers in social workers’ relationships with young children, and to compliment the process of reform currently underway, the UNCRC should be explicitly adopted as the guiding framework from which a set of detailed practice guidelines can be drawn up and implemented to help improve practice in building relationships and communicating with young children. In particular, the chapter highlights the principles of the UNCRC and their centrality to effective social work with young children before concluding with a framework of best practice principles that can be used as both a set of guidelines for daily practice and an audit tool.
