ABSTRACT

The study of education anywhere can never take place in a vacuum. Education’s interrelations with history, geography, philosophy, sociology, economics and political science are inextricably close. The social, political and economic conditions of the current African situation have a profound effect on the development and direction of African education. History provides an understanding of the strengths and limitations of the educational structures inherited by independent African States. Thus, the following chapters will attempt to give an account of both historical and the post-independence developments in education in Nigeria, Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.
