ABSTRACT

Kenya has an area of 225 000 square miles (58.3 × 106 hectares) with a population in 1970 of nearly 11 million. Today her population is around 16 million. It is situated on the western seaboard of the Indian Ocean. To the north, Kenya is bordered by Ethiopia and to the south by Tanzania, to the east and north-east by Somalia and to the west and north-west by Uganda. The altitude determines the climate, and highland areas above 1524m (5000ft) are temperate throughout the year. The great rift valley cuts Kenya in two, and beyond its western rim the land slopes down to Lake Victoria and the Uganda border. Kenya is a multiracial society. Its indigenous community consists of more than 40 ethnic groups. The majority of the people, however, speak Kiswahili which is the national language of the country.
