ABSTRACT

Perception of what the environment affords is fundamental to the capacity to successfully act (Gibson, 1979; Profitt, 2006). For instance, hiking across rugged terrain or crossing a busy street requires that a person can determine a safe, traversable route and then tailor muscular forces so as to get from the start to the goal point. Many studies have documented the ability to successfully perceive affordances (for a review, see Fajen, Riley, & Tuvey, 2009).
