ABSTRACT

In 2009, explaining his motivation for engaging in conciliation, Pat uses the metaphor of restoring something of what has been lost (extract 7.1).

Pat sees conciliation as an exploration of the loss: Jo’s loss of her father and of his own loss of humanity that resulted from his youthful decision to join the provisional IRA and engage in violence. In this chapter, extracts from the dataset where Pat talks about his decision to join the provisional IRA are analysed to show how he explains this to Jo and something of Jo’s response to the explanations.
