ABSTRACT

T his chapter will discuss the range of institutional and community settings in which speech-language pathologists (SLPs) will fi nd potential treatment candidates. We provide information about how SLPs can support individuals with dementia as they transition through different service delivery settings (e.g., home to assisted living to nursing home), as well as information about funding issues and available resources. The differences in functional behaviors, the environment, and communication partners will be outlined for each setting in order to develop logical treatment goals. The aim of the interventions we recommend is to maximize communicative and memory functioning to increase or to maintain activities, participation and engagement, and quality of life for people with dementia across the disease progression. The recommended interventions may also increase the quality of life and decrease the stress of family and professional caregivers of individuals with dementia. Multiple examples of a range of functional goals and ways to document treatment progress will be provided.
