ABSTRACT

In constructing an integrative problem formulation, we draw on relevant concepts and areas depending on the nature of the client's presenting issues in order to create a coherent picture of the client's presentation on which to base our considerations for the treatment direction that we will take with them. Such a problem formulation is by its very nature a tentative set of hypotheses to support us in the work with the client and will be regularly updated as we continue with the work. The following questions are designed to assist you in this process of re¯ecting on a particular person's situation:

1 Are there signi®cant immediate factors like drug or alcohol dependency, domestic abuse, bullying in the workplace, a relationship breakdown, a recent bereavement (to mention only a few possibilities) that are part of the client's presentation?
