ABSTRACT
In this first chapter, we aim to do two things. The first is to look at some of the conflicting views on the role of trade in development, and consider the range of policy choices which follow from them for developing countries. The second is to provide a general picture of the developing countries’ position in world trade at present as a background to the more detailed discussions in later chapters.
