ABSTRACT

This is the response of Carol, a client and hospice care nurse herself, referred by a nurse practitioner to physical therapy. Carol’s story inspired us to write this chapter for the benefit of other clients and their primary care providers. Clearly, the therapy received was not at all miraculous. Rather, it is based on principles of Eastern medicine and increasingly popular manual therapy (touch, e.g., massage) as alternatives to pharmacological and surgical responses to various ailments and scientifically diagnosed conditions like Carol’s-spinal stenosis.
