ABSTRACT

Until the 2006-2007 academic year, I was the only Chicana/o or Latina/o tenure-track faculty in the sociology department at UC Santa Barbara. Until 2004-2005, I was the only Chicana sociologist in a sociology department in the entire 10-campus UC system. Given the demographics of California, I consider this an outrage! However, this imbalance is not surprising given the historical exclusion of Chicanas/os in higher education.
