ABSTRACT
This chapter is intended to provide a summary of changes affecting family life in Japan during the period under consideration, as a background to the more specific study which is to follow. Based almost entirely on a wide range of literary sources, it has deliberately been made general in order to provide a framework within which the ensuing study can best be interpreted. A large number of references are included so that the chapter also provides possible access to more detailed work on topics mentioned here only briefly.
