ABSTRACT

The first time I rode in a motor car was at the Imperial Institute…. Since then I have ridden thousands of miles; I was the first lady to ride through London, accompanied by Mr. Hewetson, from the Institute to the Crystal Palace, in May, 1896, when I made up my mind to have a motor and drive it myself, as I had often done at the Palace, and found it quite easy; in fact, I think a woman would be a better driver than a man, as the more delicately they are steered, the closer you can pass or get out of the way of any obstructions … I am surprised at not seeing more ladies driving by themselves, but perhaps we shall a little later on, as I am told that on the Continent it is a general thing for ladies to drive their cars.
