ABSTRACT

Sensu proprio, we must admit that according to some tradition there was, in the province of Izumo, such a pass-“Yuyasaka” by name. This is on one hand what is called by Tanikawa-Kotosuga the “literal meaning” of the ancient myth, but on the other hand we must bear in mind that “Yuyasaka” has a figurative or symbolical meaning, according to which it implies a man’s breathing his last (Nihonshoki-Tsūshō, Vol. I, Preface).
