ABSTRACT

In the months following September 11, people naturally came together to address the needs of their neighbors and created support networks around shared activities and interests. The Downtown Community Resource Center facilitated a number of local projects by offering both structure and support. This chapter presents four community initiatives that evolved in Lower Manhattan: a tenants’ organization that responded to the needs of vulnerable neighbors; a samba drumming and dance school for community youth; group support meetings for journalists; and a network of artists that met in each others’ studios and developed into an international exchange project.
