ABSTRACT

As presented in previous chapters, New York City’s mental health response after 9/11 at first focused primarily on individual therapeutic interventions. Many mental health professionals from Lower Manhattan felt compelled to more broadly address needs at the community level. To achieve this end, we appealed to city and state agencies for a community recovery approach, we gave media interviews to spread awareness about the mental health impact of 9/11 and subsequent events, and we worked to connect our local projects to citywide programs. We continued to provide workshops for mental health professionals to address ongoing issues they saw in their daily work and to help them put clinical work within a community context.
