ABSTRACT

Among the urban forms introduced to the Indian city by British colonial rule, one of the most important and lasting in terms of the social, political, economic and spatial character of the city was the cantonment. During the past twenty years, Bangalore’s cantonment, the heart of the former colonial city, has been occupied, reconfigured and rebuilt by the ICT industry. Direct ICT investment and its economic spillover effects have transformed the social and physical fabric of this area, reconstituting it as an outpost of global trade and creating a new central business district (CBD). This new CBD now contains a high number and density of ICT establishments – far higher, in fact, than Electronics City.
