ABSTRACT

This chapter, thus, first conceptually characterizes rural tourism activity in comparison with past farm products resulting from rural resource use and gives a basic framework with which to conduct an empirical evaluation of the state of market formation of rural tourism activity in Japan. Second, we examine the relationship between utilization of rural resources and rural tourism. Third, we estimate the marginal labour productivity of rural tourism activities and examine the formation of the market for rural tourism in connection with the utilization of rural resources. Finally, we consider policy implications for the development of rural tourism.
