ABSTRACT

Jeffrey, B. and Woods, P. (2003) The Creative School: A framework for success, quality and effectiveness, London: RoutledgeFalmer; see pp. 1-3.

For a number of years, Jeffrey and Woods studied school life at ‘Coombes’ in considerable detail. Their research included interviews with teachers, support workers, parents, children and visitors. This extract relates to a time in which they were especially interested in children’s perspectives about the move towards creative teaching taking place across the school. In the account that follows, note the new definition of ‘childcentredness’ and the tensions that the authors highlight between externally imposed expectations and teachers’ convictions about the purpose of education. Teachers’ beliefs about teaching: see also Extract 34.
