ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to explore how labour markets in Russia and China have moved in the direction of becoming labour markets as they are known and understood in mature Western economies. We focus on the two major and key transition economies by way of comparison as to how transition within their respective labour markets fundamentally differed and, in some cases, matched one another. The reader is advised to read this chapter in conjunction with Chapter 9, which also focuses on Russia and China but from the wider perspective as to how the economies travelled and are travelling the transition path.
