ABSTRACT

At record labels, the marketing department may be set up differently than one would expect. Historically, the marketing functions for labels consisted of getting radio airplay and distributing records to retail stores. So labels developed sophisticated departments in sales and radio promotion. Other marketing functions evolved as the record business became more sophisticated, and therefore the “marketing department” may involve publicity, advertising, and retail promotion as well. More recent marketing functions may include video promotion, corporate sponsorships, new media marketing, grassroots marketing, and tour support.
