ABSTRACT

Years ago my wife was teaching in an elementary school program for deaf children. She began to have the children read the Beatrix Potter classic, “The Tale of Peter Rabbit.” Her colleagues wondered why she would choose such a difficult book, one the children would not understand; nor would they be able to relate to its remote setting or its quaint language. But my wife was convinced there was a fundamental “draw” to the story, its language and the illustrations, and that the children would become so absorbed they would work hard to make the story work.
