ABSTRACT

This chapter will discuss what we know about the listening skill to better understand what listeners do to comprehend what they hear. That is essential to determine how to teach learners to listen effectively. The examination of listening will focus on three components in order to understand what it means to be a competent listener in a broad range of contexts:

• The cognitive processes involved in listening. • The knowledge sources used in listening. • The unique features of interactive listening.
