ABSTRACT

Me? A war baby. I was conceived near a Gloucestershire aerodrome in the summer of 1942 and born on May Day, 1943.

My family was prosperous in that especially Glasgow middle-class fashion. There were links to wealth on the male side with shipping, steel and engineering; and on the female side with property and manufacturing (Beatties Biscuits). It was well into 1946 before I saw my father, when he was demobbed from North Africa. The following year my only sister was born and we moved to Bearsden, a posh dormitory town just outside the city boundary.
