ABSTRACT

The Terrorism Act 2006 was introduced to tighten the law following two attacks on London in July 2005. The Act introduces new criminal offences in relation to terrorism, amends the definition of terrorism, increases the penalties available, extends the grounds for detention and extends the period of detention and makes other miscellaneous changes to the law. Section 36 provides that the Secretary of State must appoint a person to review the operation of the Terrorism Act 2000 and Part I of the 2006 Act. The review must be carried out every 12 months and the report made to the Secretary of State must be laid before Parliament.
