ABSTRACT
The motif traced in this chapter is gikyō, a term that has no exact counterpart in English. ‘Chivalry’ or ‘heroism’ are the closest equivalents, but it is still something different. Gikyō may be defined as ‘voluntary abandonment of an intense attachment or inner urge for devotion’ to a person or a group.
