The Concepts of Status and Resource In the preceding chapter I tried to stress the great flexibility in the size of management units in Shingū by focusing on the annual cycles. This flexibility was particularly in evidence in 1930 and to a lesser degree in 1975. Nonetheless, the same principles for the flexibility also existed in 1975. Even by looking at one single boat, we can find these changes through the year. It is the same boat that was operated by one man in January 1975, by two men in May and by three in June. The changing size of the crew can be explained partly by ecological and partly by cultural factors, but at this stage I will limit the analysis to the exploration of the different statuses we can find in the management units.
