ABSTRACT
JAPAN’S invasion of China was for the second time extended to Shanghai on August 12, 1937, when the first shots were exchanged between the landing party of the Japanese Navy and the Chinese troops. In view of the precarious position of Shanghai and the threat to the important interests of Western nations in general, and of Great Britain in particular, as symbolized by Shanghai, I should like to review briefly Shanghai’s position.
