ABSTRACT
AT Nanking the Japanese Army has lost much of its reputation, and has thrown away a rare opportunity to gain the respect of the Chinese inhabitants and of foreign opinion. The collapse of Chinese authority and the break up of the Chinese armies in the region left vast numbers of people ready to respond to the order and organization of which Japan boasts. But boasts and promises alike were obliterated by what actually happened.
