ABSTRACT

Up to now, this book has addressed tobacco dependence and the development of a smoking cessation treatment program that would apply to most smokers. Most smokers face similar challenges in quitting, and approaches for overcoming these challenges, which we have presented in the prior chapters, have been tested and shown to be effective. In the next two chapters (6 and 7), we turn our focus to large subgroups of smokers who face additional obstacles to quitting. In chapter 6, we discuss the challenge of helping smokers concerned about weight gain to successfully quit, and chapter 7 presents information on helping a number of other subgroups who have particular difficulty quitting.
