ABSTRACT

Modernisation and economic development are certainly not the only themes in the official discourse on the Chinese nation. Equally important and prominent topics are state unity and reunification, sovereignty, stability, security, ‘peaceful rise’, as well as Confucian-informed ideals such as ‘harmonious society’. However, modernisation and economic development have been the most longstanding concerns of the Chinese leadership and central themes in official and public discourse on how China’s national project should evolve.
