ABSTRACT
Most Japanese people believe their country must be defended in emergency, but they do not completely trust those whose duty it is to defend it. Vivid memories of the recent past account for much of the suspicion toward the military. Moreover, there is a deep sensitivity among the people about contemporary military matters, and various polls show many citizens feel militarism is either being revived or such a possibility exists in the future.
