ABSTRACT

This chapter takes a look at two related areas which teachers in PCE have often said they are least prepared for: a workload and working situation which puts them under intense pressure, and managing conflict which may arise outside the classroom. We start by explaining what we are calling the ‘three Ps’, paper pressure, people pressure and personal pressure. The chapter then emphasises how important it is to learn to stay calm and be positive, remembering there is more to life than work alone. Focussed advice on ways of prioritising and managing time follows, and then an introduction to what can cause conflict, and some basic techniques for managing conflict situations.
